Classic Tile in Kathmandu
Kathmandu, Nepal · Terracotta · 150 m²

A rebuilt family home in the Kathmandu Valley, put up after the 2015 earthquake with a lighter roof in mind. The original brick-and-clay roof was the heaviest thing on the structure; the Classic profile cut the dead load by roughly two thirds.
Monsoon runs June to September and drops most of the annual rain in that window. The roof sits at 30 degrees with a 120 mm side lap and a deep eave overhang, so water clears the walls instead of running down them.
Terracotta was chosen to match the brick of the older houses in the valley. It is also a colour that still looks right through the dust of the dry months.
